The Program for Research on Religion & Urban Civil Society presents:
To Whom do Children Belong?
Parental Rights, Religious Community, Civic Education and Child Autonomy
Thursday, Oct 25, 12 noon
Fox-Fels Hall, Spady Room
3814 Walnut Street
In a world increasingly committed to forming global citizens, especially to overcome prejudice and undercut nationalist or religious violence, to what extent should parents retain the right to direct their children's education and upbringing? What was the justification of that right in the first place and does it remain compelling today? If not, then should deference move from parents to the state? to international authorities? or to children themselves, for the protection of their autonomy? Is this ultimately an existential contest between individual rights and communal flourishing?
Please join the Program for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society (PRRUCS) on Thursday, October 25th, as we welcome Professor Melissa Moschella, Assistant Professor of Medical Ethics at Columbia University and of Philosophy at the Catholic University of America, and author of the recent book, To Whom do Children Belong (Cambridge). Her lecture will be followed by responses from Prof. Sigal Ben-Porath (Penn, Graduate School of Education) and Dr. Ferdous Jahan (Penn, Fox Leadership International). Co-sponsored by the Collegium Institute for Catholic Thought & Culture and the Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy.
Seating is limited for this special luncheon in Leadership Hall.
