We often speak of the intellectual life in terms of the search for and contemplation of truth, contrasting it with the active life that prioritizes the common good over purely intellectual pursuits. Yet, from a Christian perspective, an active commitment to promoting justice is not ultimately an obstacle, but an aid to the contemplation of truth. In this day-long retreat, we will explore how the intellectual life can be renewed and enriched by the cultivation of an abiding “hunger and thirst for justice” (Mt 5:6). Taking our bearings from the essays of Elizabeth Anscombe, we will examine how one of the leading philosophers of the twentieth century drew on the Catholic intellectual tradition to address some of the most pressing issues facing our age, including the ethics of modern warfare, threats to human dignity at the beginning and end of life, and the nature of moral education. 

Undergraduate students from the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, Villanova University, and Eastern University are invited to join Collegium Institute for this day-long intellectual retreat on Saturday, March 16 from 9:30am to 4:30pm at Ivy Hall (6331 Lancaster Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19151).
