Art & Truth: Exploring the Responsibility of the Artist  — an evening Ars Vivendi conversation

Pablo Picasso once said that “Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth.” All humans seek out knowledge and truth, grasping towards the real. And as we muddle through, embedded in us is an impulse to make, sometimes to escape perhaps, but more often it seems as a way to navigate and discern what is real, what is true. So perhaps the artist, whether she uses words, musical notation, brushstrokes, thread, or movements of the body, could be thought of as an unveiler of truth, helping others to see, and perhaps as Pablo Neruda wrote, the artist may help “widen out the boundaries of our being and unite all living things.” This panel conversation will explore these threads of thought, to unpack the relationship between art making, truth, reality, and perhaps even a kind of communion made possible through artistic creation.
