Collegium Institute's Young Catholic Leaders Initiative will host a daylong workshop for high school students and teachers called "The Art of Living: On Beauty and Craftsmanship," on Saturday, March 22 at the Penn Newman Center.
A student once asked Aristotle why we spend much time with the beautiful. Aristotle responded harshly, but revealingly: "That is a blind man's question." Even if you agree with Aristotle's response, deeper questions remain to be answered. How do you learn to see and appreciate beauty in art and nature? What is art? What is beauty? How does art relate to beauty? How are beauty, truth, and goodness related? Why do we make? How does artistic creation relate to the divine act of creation? Why does art matter in everyday life?
Over the course of a day, "The Art of Living: On Beauty and Craftsmanship" will seek to answer these questions through lectures and small group discussions, embroidery and woodworking exercises. After the keynote lecture on the art of living, Q&A, and small group discussions, Holly Guertin, a professional fiber artist, will guide students and teachers through exercises in the practical beauties of embroidery. After lunch, teacher and carpenter Michael Nevadomski will speak about and demonstrate the value of craft and woodworking, followed by small group discussions and brief closing remarks.
The workshop is free of charge and includes free breakfast and lunch.
